How much will you have to take out?

Once you reach your required age, the IRS sets a minimum you must withdraw from traditional IRAs and 401(k)s each year. Estimate your first one.

Your details

Sets your required age: 73 if born 1951–1959, 75 if born 1960 or later.

Use the value on December 31 of last year, from your year-end statements. Leave out Roth IRAs: they have no required withdrawals for you.

Common questions

Questions about RMDs

Which accounts have required withdrawals?

Traditional IRAs, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, and 401(k), 403(b) and 457(b) plans. Roth IRAs have none while you are alive. Each IRA’s amount can be taken from any of your IRAs; each 401(k) is figured on its own.

I’m still working. Do I have to take one from my 401(k)?

Often not from your current employer’s plan, unless you own more than 5% of the company. IRAs still require one.

What if I miss it?

The penalty is 25% of the amount you should have taken, cut to 10% if you correct it within two years.

Can I give it to charity instead?

From age 70½, a qualified charitable distribution sent straight from your IRA to a charity counts toward your required amount and is not added to your taxable income.
